While you shouldn't expect Adobe's Edge to replace its Flash standard anytime soon, it will act as a gateway for the company to start using HTML5.

To help guide you through what Adobe Edge will and won't do, we've put together a quick compilation of key facts about Adobe's newest HTML-based Web animation technology.

First: Adobe Edge will not "replace" Adobe Flash. Unlike Flash, which is the standard of choice for YouTube videos and Facebook games, Edge is designed to enable "simple animations" only, such as those used for advertisements. The significance here is that Adobe is incorporating HTML5, the standard that Apple has pushed as an alternative to Adobe Flash for Web-based video. Apple mobile devices such as the iPhone and the iPad currently do not support Flash, as Apple CEO Steve Jobs has claimed that Flash crashes too often and puts too big a drain on mobile devices' power supplies to be an efficient standard for the mobile Web.

So the big news is that Adobe is dipping its toes in the HTML5 water; whether an HTML5 video standard eventually replaces Flash is still up in the air.

Second: Edge was designed with the mobile Web in mind. In another nod to Apple criticisms, Adobe says that Edge is "designed and tested to work reliably on the iOS and Android platforms, WebKit-enabled devices and popular desktop browsers." Since the mobile Web has become more of a staple for many users over the past few years, Adobe has decided it needs to cater to mobile Web users with an animation standard that works just as well as it does on the traditional desktop PC.

Third: There's more than one way to create animations with Edge. There are three major ways for users to create their own animations using Edge: By important existing Web graphics from several different standards, including SVG, JPG, PNG or GIF; by adding "motion elements" to existing HTML-based Web pages by using a JavaScript file that Adobe says "cleanly distinguishes the original HTML from Edge's animation code"; and by creating your own animations from scratch using a combination of HTML building clocks, text and assorted graphics pilfered from across the Internet.

Fourth: Edge is still in preview mode, so don't look for it to take over the world in the next week. As we mentioned earlier, Edge represents Adobe's first dabbling with HTML5 for animations so it's not ready for primetime yet. Adobe is releasing a preview of the standard to the public to receive "evaluation and feedback that will help shape the features and future roadmap of Edge." But it's safe to say that if Edge is a smashing success with both developers and Web users, Adobe will branch out its use of HTML5 to support more standards that can support video and complex gaming applications.

Will Cisco ever regain those switching margins?

Should Cisco worry? In the same week that it pares its workforce by 16%, Cisco was also presented with two major events that could likely impact its switching business.

The first is Dell acquiring Force10. In acquiring a maker of data center core and top-of-rack switches, with high-density 10G offerings, Dell fills out its data center arsenal considerably.

Dell is already a leading x86 server vendor, claiming leadership here and a No. 2 ranking worldwide. Cisco, meanwhile, claims No. 2 here and No. 3 worldwide, based on Q1 figures.

Acquiring Force10 gives another leading server vendor another switch offering. HP had its own and then acquired 3Com, and IBM acquired BLADE Network Technologies. Cisco, of course, is the king of data center networks and got into the server business two years ago.

But with the three (or four) leading server vendors now owning and able to offer Ethernet switching (and storage) to their base, what's that mean for profit margins in switching - the same margins Cisco's looking to recover through job cuts and operational restructuring? Barron's, citing a report from RBC Capital, has the same take.

You can see switching following the server model of becoming highly commoditized, low margin and dependent on large volumes.  Cisco will have to look well beyond the data center to regain that lost switching margin. We believe that was part of the impetus for last week's unveiling of the Sup 2T engine for the high-margin Catalyst 6500 base, a development that is largely aimed at that base in the enterprise campus core.

The second impactual development is Intel's acquisition of switch chip maker Fulcrum. Fulcrum is in 10G switches made by Arista Networks and IBM's BLADE acquisition, two vendors who have made a good dent in 10G data center switching but who lack the volume or critical mass to drive it to commodity levels.

Now Intel owns Fulcrum - the same Intel that supplies X86 server motherboards and NICs to HP, Dell, IBM... and yes, Cisco. The same Intel that's in most of the PCs shipping and that have shipped.

Intel has that critical mass, that ability to drive volumes. Now with a 10G switching design in its position, Intel could conceivably drive the same volumes that it does in PCs and server motherboards (just by selling to its server base of HP, IBM, Dell), thereby accelerating 10G switching's eventual commoditization, and that of follow on 40/100G Ethernet.

These two events indicate that, not only will switching likely follow the commoditization and margin erosion model of servers, it will likely accelerate. That can't be good news for Cisco, as noted by Rob Enderle in this post on ITBusinessEdge. Especially coming the same week that margin erosion in switching is costing the company 16% of its workforce.
